Road to Legal Betting

The betting sector of Vietnam has been following a steady but sluggish pace of progress. In 2012, according to The Wall Street Journal, Hanoi’s Finance Ministry expressed backing for making football gambling lawful.

Vietnamese Finance Minister Vuong Dinh Hue then visited Singapore to see how gamblers in Singapore go about their business. He found out Vietnam could take a leaf from Singapore Pools (SG Pools)by legalizing gambling and thereby putting an end to illegal gambling activities in that country.

The Vietnamese government issued a legal document in 2017, Decree 03/2017/ND-CP which is commonly known as Decree 03. It allows for the opening of gambling houses in certain tourism areas, however, there must be at least $2 billion for their establishment.

Just a little while after, Decree 06 (Decree 06/2017/ND-CP) was issued allowing gambling on football matches and horse racing. This idea was made stronger the next year in Vietnam by the National Assembly that allowed local players to bet on international football as we approached the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Legal Casino Gaming in 2021

In 2021, a three-year trial gave the opportunity to local players to experience a live casino. Vietnam recently legalized mixed martial arts in 2020, which is an opportunity for aspiring fighters all over the country. The Vietnam Mixed Martial Arts Federation (VMMAF) governs everything related to MMA in Vietnam, and betting firms were quick to start offering various types of bets on local contests.
