Floorball is a relatively young sport that has less than 30 years of existence. It was initiated in the Swedish city of Gothenburg during the 1970s as a joyous, indoor alternative to bandy, the ice hockey variant played on open ground.

In floorball, five players play on the field plus one goal keeper. Every field player is armed with a stick with length of about one meter while the ball has 26 holes that are each 10 mm in diameter. Finland won the first six Floorball World Championship titles until Sweden was crowned champions in 2008 in Czech Republic. Both Finland and Sweden reached the final undefeated and it ended up as a nail-biting contest that went into overtime, with Finns defeating Swedes by 7-6.
Finland held the 2010 World Championship in Floorball and the hosts were indeed good to their home supporters by winning a sixteen-team tournament having won all six games, with the last of them being a 6-2 victory over Sweden.
Sweden emerged as the champions of the 2012 Floorball World Championship after having triumphed over Finland in the final match by a margin of 11-5. The Swedes’ total score is seven gold and two silver medals putting them on top of the medal chart. Finns are second, bearing two gold, five silver and two bronze medals. Switzerland is third with more than two medals that have been awarded in this event; besides, no other nation has won even twice. A single silver medal and five bronze make Swiss’ account impressive too.
