Object of the Game

Netball is a game played by two teams of seven players each. The aim is to score the highest number of goals by throwing the ball through the ring that stands on top of a 3.05 metre (10-foot) goal post, without backboard like in basketball.

The match is made up of four quarters. Most netball games usually last for 60 minutes in total. A team that scores the most goals within this time wins the game.

Players and Equipment

All the teams have seven players, but they do not have sufficient freedom to move on the playground. In this place goals can only be scored by two shooters standing at the attacking shooting circle. These are:

• Goal Attack: Can move throughout the centre and attacking thirds, and can enter the shooting circle and score goals.

• Centre: Can move anywhere on the court, except in either goal circle.
• Wing Defence: Can move between the centre and defensive thirds, but cannot stand in the defending shooting circle.
• Goal Defence: Can move between the centre and defensive thirds, including the defending goal circle.
• Goal Keeper: Most stay inside the defensive third, and can move into the defending shooting circle.

Netball is a game that is played on a court measuring 30.5 metres by 15.25 metres. The circles are semi-circular and have a radius of 4.9 meters. It has the dimensions equivalent to about 700mm in girth, and weighs slightly above 400gms as well.

Scoring

All goals must be scored within the shooting circle, which is also called the goal circle. The only people allowed to shoot are the goal attack and goal shooter. Any ball thrown into the net from outside, or by a player other than these two, shall not count.

Moreover, if a goalkeeper or goal defense parries a shot it is not counted as a goal even if the ball goes through the hoop.

Rules of Netball

In the game of netball, it is forbidden for a player to take more than one stride with the ball before passing it on. Moreover, a player has got to pass or shoot within two seconds. As such, most or all players have an opportunity to touch the ball in one way or another during netball games quite oftenly.

With every goal scored, the game restarts through centre pass; where one of the players in the centre keeps one foot within the circle and throws the ball into play. Note that these passes at the center are always alternated between teams regardless of who scored a goal last.

Contact in netball is restricted. Players are only allowed to touch one another provided they do not obstruct an opponent. Also, a play has to be at least three feet away from the person holding the ball as he or she tries to guard it.
