Table Tennis Facts
China is generally the first country that comes to mind when people think of table tennis. Such an association with China is justifiable; Chinese men and women have always been the leading players in this sport winning Men’s and Women’s team championships on 21 occasions each. Table tennis gambling is also widely appreciated in China.
There have been other moments of glory for other countries too. Hungary was the best team at the early years of the game and this is shown by 12 world titles which they won, 11 of them being between 1926 – 1952. Similarly, Sweden ever had its own period of dominance as far as men’s play was concerned in three successive years (1989, 1991 and 1993) when it won team title.
The interest of Russians in the game is strong despite their never having won any Olympic medals. The Russian domestic league, Liga Pro, attracts a lot of money from betting by Russians and outside.
For some time in the women’s table tennis, there was a time when China seemed like a step behind the two rivals. Romania took five titles in the 1950s and Japan four. Japan went on to be another world power for over another decade; they won eight titles from 1952 to 1971.
